What happened to the Gear VR

Samsung and Oculus ended support for the Gear VR in 2020, and we retired ours soon after. This page stays up because people still search for it, and because the question behind the search is a good one: what should you rent today for the job the Gear VR used to do?

What we rent instead

The Meta Quest 3. No phone to slot in, no cable, a sharper screen, hand tracking, and a library the Gear VR never had. It’s the headset we bring to most events now. If you want the premium version, the Apple Vision Pro is available on request.

What the Gear VR was good for

Quick 360 video demos, one headset per guest at a low cost, and trade show giveaways loaded with a brand’s own film. If that’s the job, a Quest 3 equipment-only kit does it better and is priced for it.

Other headsets we’ve retired: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Oculus Go.
